Domain Names – How Do They Work?

A domain name, with the help of the Domain Name System (DNS) gives the location or address of your website on the web.

When a visitor enters your web site address (i.e. kingsolutions.org.uk)  into their browser or clicks on a link they are requesting a connection to your domain. This triggers the local DNS server to lookup the requested domain in the corresponding registry for the requested domain.

The registry will indicate which name server (the address of your web host) this domain is registered with. A lookup request then goes to the name server to obtain the actual internet protocol (IP) address of the requested domain; your browser then establishes connection  with the returned IP address.

You can research your domain name choices at any of the registrars listed in my article, ‘Where to Register Domain Names". Most of these registrars provide domain name registration, domain name hosting, free domain name search facilities and some even give you a FREE domain name if you accept their domain name hosting package.
