Writing a basic blog post

So, it’s time to write your first WordPress blog post!

Writing a blog is like sending an e-mail: you give it a title, write the message, enter an address and click a button to send.

Follow these steps to write a basic blog post:

  1. Login to WordPress as the administrator.
  2. Click the “Add New” link on the “Posts” menu.
  3. Type the title of your post in the Title text box.
  4. Select the Visual text editor for WYSIWYG formatting and click the Kitchen Sink icon to display the enhanced formatting options. The Kitchen Sink icon should be the last icon in the Title text box.
  5. You can switch between the Visual and the HTML text editors as the need arises. I suggest you write the text using the Visual text editor but switch to the HTML editor if you require anything more complex such as tables.
  6. Type the content of your post in the Post module text box.
  7. In the Excerpt module enter a short summary of your post, about twenty words maximum. This text can be used in the, “Read More” links.
  8. In the Post Tags module, type the tags (keywords or key phrases) representing this blog, ensuring each tag is separated (delimited) with a comma.
  9. Select or add the category(s) under which you want to organise (file) this post in the Categories module.
  10. Presuming you want others to communicate with you, in the Discussion module ensure the Allow Comments on this Post and the Allow trackbacks and pingbacks on this post boxes are checked.
  11. Click the Preview button in the Publish module, located at the top right side of the Add New Post page.
  12. If you’re happy with your blog entry, click the Publish button on the right hand side of the page to publish the post to your blog and then click the Visit Site link at the top of the page to view your blog as the world sees it.

Dressing up your posts with images, video, and audio

That’s the quick and simple blog post method completed but if you want to go a stage further you can also dress up a post with images, video and audio using the icons above the Post module text box, but I’ll let you play with those.

The video guide above, “Writing your first blog post using WordPress 2.8x”, gives a more detailed guide to inserting graphics and multimedia in your blog posts.
