WP Quick Install Script Quickly Installs WordPress, Plugins, and Themes

Do you install WordPress on multiple installations or for multiple clients? Do you want a simple, quick way to automate the process? If your answer is YES then you’ll be interested in WP Quick Install, an interesting (and free) new tool from Julio Potier, Jonathan Buttigieg, and Jean-Baptiste Marchand-Arvier.

They are part of the WP Rocket team and wrote the WP Quick Install tool for use internally for their clients. Luckily for us they have decided to share their WP Quick Install tool with the rest of the community.

Easiest Way to Download and Customised a WordPress Installation

The WP Quick Install team claim the script is the easiest way to install a customised WordPress installation.

The tool is really simple to use. You download the script and then upload it to where you want your installation. When you run the script, the WP Quick Install installation screen allows you to install WordPress with the additional themes and plugins your site requires plus configure some of the most common WordPress settings. You can also instruct the tool to auto-remove the default content created by WordPress, i.e. page, post, comment, themes, etc.

Automatically Install Plugins and Themes While Installing WordPress

I set up a fresh WordPress installation several times a month, both for clients and for testing purposes and it’s always the same, download the latest WordPress zip file, unzip, upload to server via ftp (when not using on local host), install the required theme and plugins, remove the default WordPress content, configure the settings, etc. Well no more, the WP Quick Install tool will do this for us.

• WP Quick Install also allows you to select search engine privacy settings, media thumbnail sizes, revision and auto-save settings, enable debug mode and disable the theme and plugin editors.
• With regards plugins, you simply specify the plugins you want and WP Quick Install will automatically download and install them.
• As for themes, WP Quick Install will automatically install any theme you place in the wp-quick-install folder and named theme.zip.

The automatic plugin installation part of the script will probably save users the most time. This allows you to specify plugins (extensions) by their slugs (separated by semicolons) and automatically activate them upon installation.

The Real Time Saver – Pre-populate

Now although the WP Quick Install installation form is tedious to fill out it’s still a real time saver, but the good news is that you can include a data.ini file to pre-populate the installation form and/or to generate content (posts, pages, etc).

In the future, the WP Rocket team plans to add additional features to the script. The script, which uses the WordPress 4.0 language API, is on GitHub and it’s open to contributions and suggestions.

The WP Rocket team created WP Quick Install chiefly for novice developers and were not intending to replace the classic WordPress installation.

Alternative methods that might interest you are WP-CLI and GNU Wget.

• WP-CLI is a set of command-line tools for managing WordPress installations. You can update plugins, set up multi-site installs and much more, without using a web browser. (Advanced users).
• GNU Wget is a free software package for retrieving files using HTTP, HTTPS and FTP, the most widely-used Internet protocols. It is a non-interactive command line tool, so it may easily be called from scripts, cron jobs, terminals without X-Windows support, etc. GNU Wget has many features to make retrieving large files or mirroring entire web or FTP sites easy. (Advanced users).
