How do I Login to WordPress Administration Panel?

WordPress login

One of the most common newbie questions about WordPress is, “What’s my WordPress Login URL” or “How do I login to WordPress” or “How do I login to my WordPress administration panel”. In this article, I’ll show you the answers to these questions.

WordPress Front-end Backend

Your WordPress site consists of a front-end and a backend. The front-end is the public area, the blog. The backend is the management dashboard or admin area. The login page is the gateway between the front-end and backend of your website.

Once logged in, you can create new posts and pages, change your design, add plugins, etc.

How to Find the Login URL?

On a typical WordPress install with a good web hosting provider all you need to do is add /wp-admin/ to the end of your sites domain name.

Example:

http://yourdomain/wp-admin/

which will call the default index.php file in that folder.

Alternatively you can access the login page by going to this URL:

http://yourdomain/wp-login.php

If you installed WordPress in a subdirectory such as /wordpress/ then you would need to insert that subdirectory into the login path like this:

http://yourdomain/wordpress/wp-admin/
http://yourdomain/wordpress/wp-login.php

If you installed WordPress on a sub-domain, then you can access the login page like so:

subdomain.yourdomain/wp-admin/
subdomain.yourdomain/wp-login.php

Once you login, you will be redirected to the admin area of your site which is located in the wp-admin folder of your main site.

Add a Bookmark

Probably the easiest method to access your WordPress login URL, is to add a bookmark to your browser’s bookmark bar.

Add a Login Menu Item

WordPress links

If a bookmark is not suitable, because you use a variety of devices or browsers, you may prefer to add a login menu item to your website.

To do this, login to the WordPress admin area and go to, Appearance > Menus. Click on the Links tab to expand it and then add your login page URL and link text. Click on the Add to Menu button to add this link to your site’s navigation menu. Drag the menu item to the menu location required and click the Save Menu button.

Meta Widget

WordPress Meta

To add an easily accessible prominent link to your login page you can use the Meta widget.

The default Meta widget adds 5 of the standard links (register, login, entries RSS, comments RSS, and WordPress.org) to your page. To install the widget go to, Appearance > Widgets and drag and drop the meta widget to one your website’s sidebar or widget-ready area.

If you want to customise this widget use a plugin such as, Custom Meta Widget.

Remember Me

On the WordPress login page, there is a “Remember Me” checkbox. Checking this box during login will allow you to access the admin area without logging in on subsequent visits.

When checked, WordPress will remember the login session for 14 days. If unchecked, the login session will be remembered for only 2 days. Once a login session expires, WordPress will require you to log in again if you wish to continue using the admin section of the site.

  • However, please note, the use of this facility is not recommended on public computers, so use with care.

Hopefully this article helped you learn how to find your WordPress login URL and easily access your admin area. If you have any thoughts or suggestions relating to the article don’t forget to let me have them in the comment box below. Thanks for dropping by.
