WordPress Backup Solutions
Do you like living on the edge, never knowing when disaster is going to strike?
If like most of us, your answer is no, then creating regular WordPress backups should be one of your high priorities.
Backups give you a peace of mind, save you from catastrophic situations such as server failure or being hacked. There are many free and premium WordPress backup solutions in the form of plugins available to you, the few that I have tried and think worthy of a mention are presented here.
Remember: It is your responsibility to backup your website, not you hosting provider. Do not rely solely on your hosting provider for backups and always check the integrity of your backups (yes, I have been bitten).
My Recommended WordPress Backup Solutions
Best WordPress Backup Plugins
VaultPress is a subscription-based security and backup service for self-hosted WordPress sites. It was founded by Matt Mullenweg (WordPress co-founder) and his team at Automattic.
VaultPress offers an automated real-time cloud WordPress backup solution. It scans your site for potentially dangerous files, and suspicious changes to your WordPress install. You get an email you if anything is found.
Prices start at $55 per year ($5 per month). All plans offer a 30-day money back guarantee. Upgrade, downgrade, or cancel at anytime.

BackupBuddy is one of the most popular premium backup plugins for WordPress. It allows you to easily schedule daily, weekly, or monthly backups and store them in Dropbox, Amazon S3, Rackspace Cloud, FTP, Stash (their cloud service) and even email it to yourself.
BackupBuddy is a subscription based service. Prices start at $80 to backup two sites. You are licensed to use the plugin on the number of sites mentioned in your plan. You get access to premium support forums, updates, and 1GB of cloud storage to store your backups (you can purchase more if required).
A real advantage of BackupBuddy is the ability to move your WordPress installation to a new host with no downtime.

BackUpWordPress will back up your entire site including your database and all your files on a schedule that suits you. With over 200,000 active installs, it’s quite a popular WordPress backup solution.
Works in low memory, “shared host” environments and can handle multiple schedules for your database and files.
The free version does not allow you to store your WordPress backups to a cloud storage service. If you want to store your backups on Dropbox, Google Drive, FTP, etc, then you will need to purchase a premium extension. The Developer bundle costs $99 for unlimited sites and one year updates licence.

CodeGuard is an automated real-time cloud backup service. Just connect your site by giving CodeGuard your ftp/sftp/MySQL information. It’s that easy.
It allows you to create complete daily backups with real-time updates of your website and store it on their secure offsite cloud servers. You can restore your backups with one click or download the backups to your own computer for added security or manual restore.
Pricing? CodeGuard is a subscription service starting at $5 a month for their Ninja service. Unlike VaultPress, CodeGuard plans allow for multiple website backups making the overall cost per backup significantly lower.
A real advantage when using CodeGuard is the fact that it works on all website platforms, not just WordPress.

As the name suggests, Duplicator, can clone, backup, move and transfer an entire site from one location to another. This is a really popular method of cloning and backing up a WordPress site, with over 700,000 active installs.
- I use Duplicator to clone this site to /localhost/ for testing purposes.
Unfortunately, Duplicator is not an easy application to use. It does require some technical knowledge. Also, it does not allow you to create automated scheduled backups which makes it less than ideal as a primary backup solution.
Duplicator Pro is the premium version of the plugin. With professional features like, scheduling, cloud storage to Dropbox, Google Drive, FTP and a long list of other enhancements.

If you only want to backup your WordPress database then WP-DB-Backup is one of the most popular WordPress backup plugins for this task. It has more than 400,000 active installs.
As a WordPress site backup solution this is not your answer as you will have to backup your other files manually. If on the other hand you do not update WordPress or your plugins or upload images, then WP-DB-Backup could be used as your WordPress backup solution.
WP-DB-Backup enables the creation of database backups, schedule automated backups, and restore your database. It is also a very useful if you do not have access to phpMyAdmin to backup a WordPress database manually.

WordPress Backup Solutions Final Thoughts
There are many WordPress backup solutions. All the plugin presented have their Pros and Cons. I would recommend you pick a solution that is very easy and intuitive to use. If possible your WordPress backup solution should offer real-time incremental backups.
- Real-time incremental backup creates a backup of any changes to your site as they happen, literally within minutes of the update. This means you don’t have to update all your files every day or every week. This WordPress backup solution is ideal for larger sites.
Both CodeGuard and VaultPress offer real-time incremental backups.
For small to medium sized websites, try BackupBuddy or BackUpWordPress. Both are quite popular WordPress backup solutions, especially for those in shared hosting environments.
Well, I hope that this list helps you pick the best WordPress backup solution for your site. Please make regular backups a habit and save yourself from a lot of trouble.
Remember: The most expensive backup is the one you never did! And please test your backups!
