Forget About Shortcode Buttons, Add Buttons in WordPress Interactively

Add Buttons in WordPress Without Shortcodes

Lets face it, we don’t want to type complex HTML and CSS code every time we need to insert a button into a blog post or page. I don’t know about you, but I also find trying to remember shortcodes a pain in the rear end. I have enough of a problem remembering my pin numbers let alone anything else.

Enter the, Forget About Shortcode (FASC) Buttons plugin by Designs & Code. Although this plugin is only compatible with WordPress 3.9 and upwards it is a WYSIWYG way to add CSS buttons into your posts from the WordPress Visual Editor.

Once you have activated the plugin, simply create a new post or edit an existing one, and you will see a new button in the Visual Editor labelled Insert Button.

Editor layout

To insert a new button in your post, just place your cursor where you want the button to appear and click on the Insert Button. This will bring up a popup window where you can design your new button. Enter your button text and link. Select the button size, style and colour and you’re done. If you want you can even add a selection of icons both before and after the text on your buttons. These icons are actually icon fonts.

Design button

  • Icon fonts are vector icons used as fonts. They are popular among web designers because they look prettier than bitmap images. They can be resized without losing quality and styled using CSS. This is why many WordPress themes use icon fonts.

WordPress Icon Fonts

Once you are satisfied with the look of your button, simply click on Insert. The button will appear in the WordPress Visual Editor exactly as it will appear in your post.

You can position the button in exactly the same manner as text. Use the align icon in the editor to centre, left or right justify as required.

Double clicking on the button will bring up the Insert Button popup where you can re-edit your button if needed.

So, instead of adding shortcodes where you want your buttons to appear you can now insert real, styled buttons. This makes the process of adding buttons to your posts and pages much more natural.

If you look at the code produced by Forget About Shortcode Buttons by clicking the editors “text” tab, you’ll see it’s nice and clean. This is because the plugin uses the exact same classes as on the front end of your site with no extra or hidden mark-up.

Finally, if you have any thoughts or suggestions relating to adding buttons without using shortcodes in WordPress, don’t forget to let me have them in the comment box below. Thanks for dropping by.
