Create and Extract ZIP Files Using XP Windows Explorer
Did you know there is a little known facility built right into Windows to create and extract zipped files? If you simple want a fast, easy to use method of zipping files ready for sending via email this could be the answer you have been looking for.
To Create a ZIP file using Windows
Start Windows Explorer and select the folder or range of files you wish to compress. Right-Click on the selection to pop-up the menu and click on the Send To menu option. Choose Compressed (zipped) Folder.
At this point you may be presented with a message box stating;
- For Compressed (zipped) Folders to handle ZIP files correctly, the application associates with them must be Compress (zipped) Folders. Currently this is not the case. Do you want to designate Compressed (zipped) Folders as the application for handling ZIP files?
This message may pop-up if you have another archiving program running in the background.
Simply answer, Yes, and the files will be zipped. You should now see that a file with a .ZIP extension has been created.
The zipped files name will be that of the folder you selected or if you selected a range of files the name of the first file in that selection. In either case the file will have the .ZIP extension.
To extract a ZIP file using Windows
Start Windows Explorer and select the ZIP file you wish to extract. Right-Click on the file to pop-up the menu and click on the Extract All menu option.
The Extraction Wizard dialog window will open welcoming you to the compressed (zipped) folders extraction wizard. Just click on the Next button to continue.
The next Wizard window will ask you for the destination where you want to extract the ZIPped file. Enter the path where you would like the files to be extracted or just accept the default location. If the directory stipulated does not exist, it will be created.
When you have entered a destination folder for the extracted files, click the Next button to continue.
The files are extracted. When the file extraction has finished you will be presented with the Extraction Complete dialog window informing you of a successful extraction to the requested folder and asking if you would like to open the folder where the files were extracted.
If you want to see the extracted files just leave the checkbox, Show extracted files, selected and click the Finish button. A folder will open showing you your extracted files ready for use.
If you do not want to see the extracted files uncheck the checkbox, Show extracted files, and click the Finish button.
All the ZIPped files are extract to the directory specified ready for use.
