Definition of SEM – Search Engine Marketing

SEM is an acronym for Search Engine Marketing.

A form of internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs).

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a form of Internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility and rank in organic listings through optimisation, both on-page and off-page, as well as through advertising (paid placements, contextual advertising, digital asset optimization, paid inclusions, etc.) or a combination of these in Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

  • When this term is used to describe an individual, it stands for “Search Engine Marketer” or one who performs SEM.

Depending on the context, SEM can be an umbrella term for various means of marketing a website including Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), which adjusts or rewrites website content to achieve a higher ranking in Search Engine Results Pages, or it may contrast with SEO, focusing on only paid components.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Providers, Who are They?

So, who’s actually providing the Pay Per Click and paid placement on the web?

Well, Yahoo have a program, which because of the Yahoo and Microsoft alliance allows ads on both Yahoo! Search and Bing with just one account. There’s also the Yahoo! Search Market site where you, “Connect with customers searching for what you sell.”.

There is of course Google with their AdWords and AdSense programs. They also have areas to help you create your ads and attract customers along with an AdWords overview and how the cost of AdWords are calculated.

Then there’s Google AdSense, where you can “maximize revenue from your online content”. In this program online publishers earn revenue by displaying relevant ads on their web sites.

How Many Website Types are There?

There a are basically six types of website.

However sites can be a combination of these six themes, but there is usually a predominant theme which stands out above all the rest.

Those sites fall into these categories:

  • To create web based sales.
  • To create offline sales.
  • To generate leads.
  • To create market awareness.
  • To be informative or entertaining in some way.
  • To influence or persuade peoples thinking in some way.

Knowing what type of website you have and its major theme will help you capture the different stages of how people search.

The Basis of SEM

So this is basically what Search Engine Marketing, in all its different formats, is all about. Keep in mind that SEO can actually be incorporated with SEM.
