Code Management and Plugin Repository

WordPress provides a free home for any plugin at the WordPress plugin directory, which is really a frontend to the WordPress Plugin Repository.

  • The idea behind this repository is to provide a rich environment for developers to create and share their work on WordPress related plugin development. The WordPress plugins repository is a high availability set of development tools (a wiki, version control using Subversion, and bug tracker) that aims to nurture the active WordPress development community. WP-Plugins.org is completely free to use. [WordPress Repository 2013]

Subversion (SVN) is software that allows you to easily store and manage your plugin projects.

  • Subversion exists to be universally recognized and adopted as an open-source, centralized version control system characterized by its reliability as a safe haven for valuable data; the simplicity of its model and usage; and its ability to support the needs of a wide variety of users and projects, from individuals to large-scale enterprise operations. Once your plugin is placed in the WordPress subversion repository, everyone will be able to download a copy of your plugin, but only you, the plugin author, will have the ability to commit changes to the plugin stored in the repository.

  • Plugin name: Make sure the plugin name is final as you can’t change the name. For best results, keep the name simple and related to user searches on the plugin niche.
  • Plugin Description: A concise, one sentence description is all you need at this point.
  • Plugin URL: Make sure the URL you specify is the correct homepage, i.e., where the plugin will actually live. If you would like your own web site so you can host and support your plugins see my article, ‘Where to Register Domain Names“.

Access requests usually take a couple of days to process, this gives you time to polish your documentation. Once your request has been approved, you will get an email with the details for accessing your repository.
