How to Install WordPress Plugins

In this step by step tutorial, I will show you how to install a WordPress plugin using the automatic, admin upload and FTP methods.

WordPress.com Users

WordPress.com WordPress.org

Sorry, but if you are using WordPress.com, then you cannot install plugins. Plugins can only be installed on self-hosted WordPress.org sites.

If you want to switch from WordPress.com to WordPress.org, then read my tutorial on, how to move from WordPress.com to WordPress.org.

Install WordPress Plugins: Automatic Plugin Search

The first method we will cover is the automatic plug-in search method.

Automatic installation using plugin search, is the easiest option for installing a WordPress plugin, as WordPress handles the file transfer, and you don’t need to leave your web browser.

The downside for this method? The plugin must be listed in the WordPress plugin directory, which is limited to free plugins, premium plugins are not allowed.

To do an automatic install of the plugin, log in to your WordPress dashboard, navigate to the Plugins menu and click “Add New”.

In the search field type the name of the plugin or the functionality you are looking for, and click Search Plugins. Once you have found the plugin, install it by clicking, Install Now.

WordPress will now download and install the plugin for you.

Once the plug-in is downloaded and installed, you should see an Activate button.

If you intend to use the plug-in immediately, then click on the Activate button to activate the plug-in on your WordPress site.

Congratulations, you have successfully installed a WordPress plugin.

The next step is to configure the plugin settings, which, as I do not know which plugin you have installed, cannot be covered in this tutorial. Sorry.

If you need further help installing a plugin, I suggest you watch the video above.

How to Install WordPress Plugins, Admin Upload

Install WordPress Plugins: Admin Upload

The next way you can install a plug-in is by using the admin upload method.

Why would you want to install a plug-in using this method? Well, if a plug-in is not listed in the WordPress plug-in directory, you would have little alternative.

For example, premium WordPress plugins are not listed in the WordPress plugin directory. This means these plugins cannot be installed using the automatic WordPress plugin search method.

These are the steps you will need to complete to install a WordPress Plugin using admin upload:

To install a WordPress plug-in using the admin upload method, do the following:

  • Download the plugin’s source file (usually a zip archive file) to your computer.
  • From your sites WordPress dashboard, click Plugins > Add New.
  • Click on the Upload Plugin button at the top of the page.
  • On the upload page, click the, Choose file button and select the plugin file downloaded previously.
  • Click the Open button to upload the file, followed by the Install Now button.

WordPress will then upload the plug-in file from the computer, and install it for you. You will see progress messages, followed by a success message when the installation has finished.

  • Once installed, click on the Activate link to start using the plug-in.

You would now configure the plugin settings to suit your needs.

How to Install WordPress Plugins, FTP

Install WordPress Plugins: Manual using FTP

Our final method of installing a WordPress plug-in is by using FTP.

  • If you do not have your FTP username and password, then contact your WordPress hosting provider and ask them.

Why would you want to install a plugin manually using FTP? Well, if a plugin is not listed in the WordPress plugin directory, you may have no alternative. Also, some WordPress hosting providers have file restrictions which will prevent you from installing a plugin using the above methods.

Installation of a WordPress Plugin using this method requires FTP familiarity, and the awareness that you may put your site at risk if you install a plugin which is incompatible with your current version of WordPress, or from an unreliable source.

  • I suggest you backup your WordPress site if in any doubt.

The steps you will need to complete to install a WordPress plug-in manually using FTP are as follows:

  • Download the plugin’s source file (usually a zip archive file) to your computer.
  • Extract the zip file to your computer. This will create a new folder containing all the plugin files. I suggest you read the “readme” file contained in this folder to ensure you follow the correct installation instructions.
  • Upload this folder and contents to your website using FTP. Place the folder and contents in the wp-content/plugins folder in your WordPress directory.

With the above steps completed, go to the WordPress dashboard and click on the Installed Plugins link in the admin menu. You will see your plugin successfully installed on the plugins page.

Once installed, click on the Activate link to start using the plug-in.

You would now configure the plug-in settings to suit your needs.
