Optimise Your MySQL Database using phpMyAdmin

This article is part of the, ‘Reduce WordPress CPU Usage’ series.

Do you have your files, books, toys, socks, etc. scattered all over the place? You do! In that case, this article is probably not for you. For the rest of us mortals who like to keep things in reasonable order – read on.

Just as having your books scattered everywhere makes the title you want difficult to find, so it is with your WordPress database. Your MySQL database gets slowly fragmented as it is used. By completing the simple step of optimizing your database, WordPress is able find the data faster, reduce CPU overhead and output pages faster.

To optimise the database, open phpMyAdmin > select your database > click the ‘Check All’ hyperlink > select ‘Optimize table’ from the ‘With selected’ drop down box.

That’s it! No need for more plugins. Nice and simple.

You probably don’t need to do this too often, try once or twice a year.
