Kontera ContentLinks – Switch from Double to Single Underline

If you haven’t heard of Kontera ContentLinks (http://www.kontera.com/), they are the leading developer of In-Text Advertising Solutions for web publishers and advertisers. You can recognise their ads by the double underline links found on words within web pages.

Their software finds contextually relevant keywords on a publisher’s web page in real-time and automatically matches them with relevant ads presented as In-Text sponsored keyword links. This provides publishers with an untapped source of advertising revenue.

By default, Kontera links have a double underline to prevent them being mistaken by visitors for site links but I’ve seen a few sites which have single underline for their Kontera links instead and wondered how this was done.

Looking at the page source (Firefox > View > Page Source) I’ve discovered the method is to simply add the following code to your Kontera code:

 

var dc_single_line = 'yes';

 

So, that’s how it’s done. The next question is, should you do it?

My opinion, and it is only my opinion. I do not recommend using single underlines for Kontera ContentLinks.  Users viewing your web pages will not know which link is a Ad and which is a link to an article and one thing you don’t want to do is confuse your viewers. Confusion leads to distrust. At best it would come under the heading, “mis-representation”.

Making your Kontera links single underline may help you get more clicks on your Kontera ads but try it at your own risk.
