Split Testing Email Campaign with GetResponse How to Video

Do you think a good appealing title will get your emails opened where your competitions, less prominent, email titles fail?

How do you know? How can you discover which title works best? Which of those catchy titles do you customers like? Which title gets the most click through?

Discover the truth?

The answer is to use GetResponse split testing on every email message before you send it to your readers. Learn what works and what doesn’t work. Discover what your readers are looking for almost instantaneously.

The system works by sending up to five versions of your message to a sample audience to discover what works and what does not work. Learn which emails get you the best click through rate and which email drives conversions into sales best. When the test is over, send only your best email version to your list.

What is Email Split Testing?

Split-testing, A/B testing or bucket testing is a market testing strategy by which a baseline control sample is compared to one or more unique strategies for opt-in forms or broadcast messages in a controlled experiment.

By testing and then analyzing results, we can get a better understanding of what our website visitors and subscribers respond to best, allowing for optimization of our email marketing campaigns.

Useful tests include:

  • Comparing different incentives in the subject line.
  • Adding or omitting fields (e.g. phone number, address)
  • Using varying text to label the submit button (e.g. “Sign Me Up!”, “Get Your Free Newsletter”)

Questions for Better Email Split Tests

Here are a few questions to help you divine better, smarter email optimization tests.

  • What are we trying to improve?
  • Do the proposed tests have a high success potential?
  • How will we measure the outcome?
  • Is this a valid measurement?
  • Can we re-use the results in later campaigns?

It’s amazing what a catchy title can do to get your emails opened over the competitions, but you’ve got to be sure that catchy title and content mean something to your audience or you’re wasting valuable time and money.

Split Test Every Message?

You could use GetResponse split test every message before you send it and learn what works what doesn’t and what readers are looking for almost instantaneously.

Send Email Split Test to Sample Audience

Send up to five versions of your message to a sample audience and automatically test for the best results. Learn which emails produce the best click through and convert leads into sales, then use GetResponse to send the best performing email to the majority of your list.

Get Started Split Testing

To get started split testing, go to messages on the GetResponse menu bar and click send split test. A list of existing split tests is displayed along with the status of the test. You can edit or delete a split test by clicking on the link to the far right.

To start a new split test enter a name in the Split-Test Name text box and click the Create New Split Test button.

Then select which contacts should receive this message and click the next button. The split test can have between two and five messages. To set your split settings, choose at least two message. You can either create a new message or use an existing message.

Select which message type you require, follow-up or newsletter, from the drop-down box at the top then click the get message button to the right.

The message opens automatically into the editor to enable you to make any changes from the original. For this message we will split test the same message but with two different subject lines.

The first subject line will read, Visit Europe, it’s the experience of a lifetime! When you’ve  finished editing, click the Next Step button and the message will automatically appear in the list.

To create the second version of the message click the Create New Message or Use Existing Message link.

For this example we will select the same existing newsletter message again and open it into the editor. This time we will enter the new subject line, Visit Europe, you will love it! and click next step.

Now that the minimum of two messages exist, the full settings for this split test are visible. Choose the percentage of recipients who should receive equal portions of the messages, in this case thirty percent would mean that each of the two messages will be seen by fifteen percent of the list.

Have GetResponse Send the Best-performing Message

After the split test goes out you can view the results and either manually decide which message to send or automatically have GetResponse send the best-performing message after the number of days you specify.

The message sent can be the one with the highest Open Ratio, Click Ratio, Sale Quantity Ratio or Sale Income Ratio if sales tracking is set-up.

When finished setting up the split test just click Next Step to send immediately or set the delivery time.

Split Test Analysis

To monitor the results of the split test go to Messages in the Menu Bar and click Send Split Test. The current status of the split will be displayed. To view the statistical results gathered for the split test, click the show split stats link to the far right.
