Domain Names, What is a Domain Name, How Do Domain Names Work?

The first thing we all ask when thinking of getting our own personal or business web site is, what is a domain name, how do domain names work and maybe even, who is domain name?

Well, put simply, a domain name works, with the help of the Domain Name System (DNS) to give the location or address of your website on the web.

When a visitor enters your web site address (i.e. kingsolutions.org.uk)  into their browser or clicks on a link they are requesting a connection to your domain. This triggers the local DNS server to lookup the requested domain in the corresponding registry (a list of everything connected to the internet) for the requested domain.

  • Domain names work because they are an easy to remember address that can be translated by domain name servers into server IP addresses.

The registry will indicate which name server (the address of your web host) this domain is registered with. A lookup request then goes to the name server to obtain the actual internet protocol (IP) address of the requested domain; your browser then establishes connection with the returned IP address.

  • What is an IP address? How do IP address names work? An Internet Protocol address (IP number) is a numeric label assigned to each device connected to the internet.  IP address names work just like your home address, it contains a name which indicates what we seek, an address indicating where it can be found and a route indicating how to get there.

When you purchase a domain name, you make sure the settings show that all requests for an IP address for that domain name are directed to the hosting name servers of your web hosting provider. If you host your web site with the Internet Service Provider with whom you registered your domain name, this will happen automatically as part of the service.

You can research your domain name choices at any of the registrars listed in my article, ‘Where to Register Domain Names‘. Most of these registrars, such as GoDaddy and JustHost (where this site is hosted) provide domain name registration, domain name hosting, free domain name search facilities and some even give you a FREE domain name for life if you accept their domain hosting package.
