Create The Perfect Domain Name: Quick Steps
Create The Perfect Domain Name
The Internet has enabled anyone who has a computer and access to the Internet to compete on equal terms. Think of the Internet as one giant interactive community, sharing information, entertainment and business. That entrepreneurial spirit is encouraged and enhanced by the many web designers, programmers and hosting providers eager to assist even the most hesitant Internet entrepreneur.
So, with your entrepreneurial spirit driving you forward, your first task is to select the perfect domain name for your website. The journey begins.
Create the Perfect Domain Name Steps:
- First, never forget the U.S. Navy’s, design principle acronym, KISS (keep it simple stupid) and make sure you adhere to this principle.
- Using KISS, select a domain name that will not confuse potential visitors. Select a website name that sounds exactly like it is spelt (KingSolutions, Wikipedia, Google, etc.).
If you look at Alexa’s Top 500 Global sites you will find few exceptions to this rule. For the most part, the obvious domain names are already spoken for, so you may need to get creative by mixing words together. I do not recommend the use of hyphens or underscores in your domain name.
- Your domain name needs to catchy, and easily spoken. People need to be able to use the name in everyday conversation and on the telephone. Consider how easily domain names like FaceBook, Yahoo or GoDaddy can be used. Okay, these are generic names that tell you nothing about the companies, but they are easy to recall and short on syllables, making it easy for everyone to remember. Use a thesaurus for brainstorming.
- Commit to securing a “.com” extension to your domain name. Another trip to Alexa will show that 90% of the top 100 U.S. ranked sites ended in “.com”. If you cannot get a “.com” name the next best selection is your country suffix, i.e., “.uk” etc. Don’t settle for the less popular “.org,” “.net” or “.info.” suffix unless you feel you need to capture a “brand image”.
- Register as many extensions of your domain name as possible (within reason) using a registrar such as GoDaddy. Definitely register “.com” and your country code extension. For some of the best domain name registrars and hosting providers on the Internet see my article, Recommended domain name registrars.
- Now ask you family and friends for their opinion on your perfect domain name. You may be surprised to discover that what you thought was a great domain name has hidden connotations, i.e., “Experts Exchange” becomes “ExpertSexChange”.
- You now have your domain name, so step over to your favourite domain name registrar and finalise the procedure.
