Definition: What is AdSense?

AdSense is an advertising program run by Google Inc. that allows publishers to serve text, image, video, and rich media advertisements which are targeted to site content and audience. These ads are administered by Google and generate revenue on a per-click basis.

  • Those wanting to advertise with AdSense’s targeted ad system may sign up through AdWords. Ads from the AdWords program are called sponsored links.
  • If you require more than traditional web analytics, try ClickTale. ClickTale’s analytics service is qualitative and provides a full video playback option for each individual visitor’s session. In addition, it uses meta statistics to create visual heatmaps and behavioural reports, as well as conversion analytics and traditional web statistics. For more information see my ClickTale review.

Publishers Supply Ad Space

From a publishers point of view, the Google AdSense program lets you sell advertising space for other people’s ads on your website. These ads are context sensitive and relevant to your site’s content pages. The service is free to publishers and (here’s the best bit) every time someone clicks on an ad you earn a little money.

AdSense (www.google.com/adsense) is a program that has become popular with bloggers and non-commercial sites around the world.

Implementing AdSense

Implementing AdSense is quite straight forward. You sign up, designate some ad space on your website pages, paste a few lines of code provided by Google into the HTML for your site and let Google magically fill your pages with ads.

  • When somebody clicks one of the ads, Google pays you a small commission fee.

If you have an e-commerce site you will need to filter the type of ads displayed by AdSense, after all, you don’t want competitor ads next to your own.

Context Sensitive Ads

You can’t define which ads appear on your site, Google decides. Google analyses your pages and supplies ads based on the page content that should appeal your visitors.

Example: If you have a site about dogs, Google will dish up ads relating to pets, pet products and animals in general.

This kind of relevance is important because you want the ads to appeal to your viewers. Ads about custom motor bikes would probably have very little interest to dog lovers. Remember, Google doesn’t pay you for placing an ad on your site; it pays you when somebody clicks an ad. So you want the ad space filled with content likely to interest your readers.

AdSense Earnings

The million dollar question is, how AdSense earnings you make? The answer is, it depends (sorry). If your site gets thousands of visitors per day and your site has a very narrow niche, there’s a good chance AdSense will serve ads which appeal to a lot of your visitors.

Example: A popular site devoted to Harley Davidson Motorcycles might provide a very good income.

Click Through Ratio (CTR)

In reality you can expect between 0.5% and 2% CTR.

Example: If you get 1000 visitors per month with an average CTR of 1% that’s 10 clicks. Presuming 5 cents (Google works in USD) per click you would get a grand total of 50 cents (about 4p UK) per month.

If your site niche is ill defined then AdSense may find difficulty supplying targeted ads for your traffic so your earning will be even lower.

Quick Tips for New Users

AdSense prefers pages with lots of text rather than pictures, because it can analyse the page content better and so provide more targeted ads to your visitors.

Google’s online help pages for AdSense (https://www.google.com/adsense/online-help) are full of useful information on getting the most out of the program, maintaining your account, troubleshooting and so on.
