Getting good advice when starting any project is key to success. If anyone can give some good advice to those thinking of launching their own business it’s Kelly Hoppen.
In this video for The Prince’s Trust, Kelly walks two young business hopefuls through her entrepreneurial secrets. These include tips on researching a market, how to learn from competitors and how to pinpoint business areas you can replicate, plus the bits you can do better.

Kelly Hoppen and has a company called Kelly Hoppen Interiors which is a multi-faceted business with stores all over the world. Kelly launched her first design business at age 16.
She runs a school, designs products, has eight books published and is an avid entrepreneur. You might know her from the TV program, Dragons Den.
South African-born Kelly, won the Andrew Martin International Interior Designer of the Year award in 1996, was awarded an MBE in 2009 and is now an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust.

So how do you get started in business? Kelly has these six easy steps on how to start a business.
- Make sure you thoroughly research the market you will be operating in. Never underestimate the importance of understanding your customers and what they want.
- Learn from your competitors. Make sure you understand what their businesses doing well and what they could improve on. Think about what you want to try and replicate and what you want to do differently.
- It’s not enough just to have an amazing idea. The key to success is how you execute it. Think about the logistics what you’re trying to achieve. Make sure you know exactly what you want to do and how you’ll do it.
- Ask for advice. I can be really helpful to get an outside perspective on issues you may struggle with.
- Make sure your bookkeeping is up to scratch from day one. Have a good system in place to ensure you report or your business expenses, even money spent on getting yourself ready to trade.
- Have confidence in your vision and remember your business goals, it’s easy to get pulled down in the day-to-day and lose track of where you want to be. Set regular time aside to work on more strategic things like financial planning or new product lines.
