In recent weeks, the health secretary ignored the views of health professionals and tens of thousands of Londoners to force through an assault on a successful hospital, Lewisham, in order to save a failing one.
Then the Francis report into Mid Staffs hospital laid bare how cuts and a push for profit-making led to horrendous misery for patients and their families, and the alienation of health professionals.
This government has paved the way for billions of health service pounds – your money – to find its way into private sector hands. As events in Lewisham show, with the downgrading of that hospital’s A&E and maternity services, no hospital or service is safe.
We are now in the fight of our lives for the NHS. Hospitals are at risk, jobs are going daily and NHS professionals are struggling with staff shortages and massive pay cuts.
