The Galaxy Zoo project (http://www.galaxyzoo.org) is about to achieve something extraordinary – and they want to share the excitement with you, the people that made it possible. The Zoonometer has been steadily ticking away toward their target of 60 million classifications. They can hardly believe it, but they’re nearly there! The article goes on to say:
“Most email systems will let you use the + symbol as a seperator and you can append whatever after that to track that email.”
but be warned, this will probably not work if your mail is being redirected.
For example, sending from Yahoo.com, via redirection, gives the following error message:
Hi. This is the qmail-send program at yahoo.com.
I’m afraid I wasn’t able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
I tried sending emails to both Yahoo and Gmail such as phil+test@yahoo.com and phil+test@gmail.com and both messages got to their destinations. The problem is the +test part of the address is clearly visible and anyone in the know will simply remove the appended and unnecessary appendix. Those farming emails will probably already have a script to automatically remove the appendix.
This would be really great if it worked, but, I still don’t see how this method would stop the unscrupulous selling your email address. Pity. Maybe the giants in the email world can make the system work?
