How to run your own affiliate program
by Philip King
So, you want to run your own affiliate program with the following provisos:
- You want to sell a product or service or both.
- You want to earn money using the affiliate marketing channel.
- You don’t want to advertise other peoples products or services.
- You don’t want to spend a small fortune setting the system up.
First the good news, there’s nothing to stop you. You don’t need to have a large budget and you don’t have to be a large company with oodles of resources. You can setup your own affiliate program for just a couple of hundred pounds (GBP).
Now the bad news. If you’re not going to use one of the affiliate network setup programs, which can cost thousands of pounds (GBP) in setup and monthly running fee’s, then you are going to have to invest your time and do some work. Sorry about that, but that’s life.
Internet marketing and the YouTube Traffic System
A little unusual in this blog, I’m just about to produce more materials on internet marketing for the website and came across a guy called Steve Nam and his YouTube Traffic System which is a set of videos (a video course) aimed at teaching you how to rank on the first page of YouTube. I don’t see how this is possible because is everyone ranked on the first page there would only be one page and that’s clearly not the case. The problem is, his claims are very impressive and can be verified easily by simply visiting YouTube.
Using the phrases, internet marketing beginner, internet marketing for beginners, internet marketing nubes, make money for beginners, money nubies and marketing for beginners, did indeed give hits every time on both YouTube and Google for Steve Nam’s You Tube Traffic System, which I found quite impressive.
Show Only Child Pages on Parent Page
I’ve been searching the web for hours today trying to find a method to keep my menu structure from scrolling all the way down the page. I’ve looked at various WordPress functions to do the job such as get_page_children(), wp_list_pages() and wp_page_menu() but there doesn’t seem to be a simple function that will list just the current menu hierarchy. But then, just in time, I found the function remove_others_children() written by Jonathan Dingman with assistance from Matt Martz.
The code is as follows, and yes I did copy this code from Jonathan’s website and yes he is in the process of modifying the code so if you want the updates just pop over to his new website.
Here is a little quote I found to be particularly interesting and quite informative at the same time… what do you think?
“A tenant .. is a partner in business who will open up the shop each morning and lock it up at night. They will look after security and inform you of potential problems in the business. They will cut the grass, rake the leaves, shovel the snow, pay all the utilities. They will even pay all your mortgage payments and taxes. Then, in the end, they will relinquish all monetary interest in the business and walk away, leaving you with the profits.”

How to Install Google Custom Search Engine in WordPress
By Philip King
Introduction
Until recently I’d never actually tried to use the default WordPress search engine, and I can say with almost certainty that I will not be using it again. My experience was ghastly, the search optimisation is terrible as is the search results presentation. If I’m wrong and there’s a better way to configure the search, please, someone let me know. So anyway, I looked around and found a Google Custom Search Engine Plugin for WordPress which I decided could not be any worse that the WordPress offering.
The plugin, by Aleem Bawany, is the usual drop-in replacement plugin that we have all come to expect with WordPress and replaces the default WordPress search. You will need to have WordPress 2.7 or better installed and sign up with Google to implement the search engine, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing anyway as you may possibly make a little money from the click though Google ads placed on the search results screen.

Best ISP for WordPress and eBusiness
by Philip King

In this article I’m simply going to state my methods and findings from when I was looking for an ISP (Internet Service Provider) to host this web site.
I will provide details of the best ISP’s I could find for those, like me, wanting their own WordPress web site and those wanting to start their own ebusiness. I started with no knowledge other than doing a little selling on eBay and no knowledge of Web CMS’s (Content Management System) at all. Prior to choosing WordPress I played with several other Web CMS’s such as Blogger, Joomla and Drupal before finally choosing WordPress because of its easy setup, good documentation and friendly user base. Strangely enough, I found the WordPress user base is one of the few groups not complaining about everything, they have a nice, friendly, positive attitude. Sorry, I’m wandering off topic (again).
The first task was to create a list of my requirements, so each of the ISPs had to satisfy the following criteria to be considered:
Broken Link Checker
by Philip King
What do you think of the websites you visit that have broken links? What do you think your visitors think of the broken links on your website?
Broken links on your website give a negative impression. Visitor frustration through wasted time and the negative impression due to unreliable information are just two of the impacts broken links can have. I’m sure you can think of many more implications.
So, add this to your website rules, check your website regularly for broken links. Ensure links do not return a 404 error (I’ll take it as read that you do have a user friendly 404 error page on your website) and where possible make sure the links are still pointing to the intended resource and haven’t been switch to some sleazy marketing or adult content page.

What A Teacher Makes
by Philip King
What follows is a little different to my usual ramblings and is based on an item I read online 091218 at baconbabble.
Having read the item I decided it would be an idea to expand upon the topic, after all, like doctors and nurses most teachers around the world are over paid, under worked and just plain lazy.
The famous phrase, “Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.” in my opinion begs the questions, "can do what?" and "will teach what?".
As we move though life we remember the significant periods and events. If we ignore the traumatic events, memories of which are basically forced upon us, who are the people, other than family, that we remember? I think most will answer in a similar manner … the doctors, nurses and/or midwife that delivered your children, the dentist who removed your first tooth, the doctor who gave you a sweet just for saying, "ahh" and of course your school head master / mistress plus your most hated and most loved teacher.
So, lets begin the exercise, a teacher is asked the question, "What do you make?" with the expected response being related to the mighty dollar (no slur intended). But what does a teacher really make? The following are some of the answers I’ve received … please feel free to add your comments.
Make Your Site Sell
Get your Free Downloadable Internet Marketing Book before the offer ends.
In 1999 when the book ‘Make Your Site Sell’ by Ken Envoy, an internet marketer, was first launched, the book was hailed as the most complete guide to internet marketing available and sold over 100,000 copies and debuted at the low price of $17.
The book that was coined, “The BIBLE Of Selling On The Net”, can be yours for FREE.
Although a little dated, much of the information contained within this book is timeless. Indeed, Mr Envoy was well ahead of his time in understanding the importance of having frequently updated content on a website.
When you download the book, ignore the stuff on search engines as it is out of date, but the rest of it is very good. The book is a little long, over 800 pages, but well worth reading.
The book can be downloaded from http://myss.sitesell.com, the link for the book can be found at the bottom of the page.
